In XYFT dates are not validated as dates. You can enter a date in any way that you choose, it’s just text. In genealogy dates can be very important but we don't yet have computers that can guarantee user input is correct or consistent - except for format. For genealogical purposes the use of dates must be open to scrutiny by later researchers, so forcing users to follow any particular format could limit the information recorded.

XYFT uses dates only for display and only the year part is used. XYFT looks for the first 4 consecutive digits in any date text.

All these would be accepted:

    • circa 1900
    • 1900 ish
    • between 1880 and 1910
    • Jan-Feb 1905
    • 1910-12-25
    • 25-12-1910
    • Christmas 1910
    • before WW1
    • 1566
    • don’t know

That list above would be displayed as:

    • 1900
    • 1900
    • 1880
    • 1905
    • 1910
    • 1910
    • 1910
    • 1566

But also note in XYFT that the chronological order of siblings and  spouses/associates is not determined by dates but the order they are listed, so it's easy to adjust even if no year is known.
