If you don’t already have any people in your family tree you’ll need to start from somewhere. See Entering Data. You need at least one person in the family before you can add any more.

Adding people (e.g. father, mother, child, sibling, spouse, associate) is a simple matter of clicking the appropriate button on the main form. All people added should be closely connected to the person in the focus, this ensures connections.

Your tree builds by adding people that have known connections to others in the tree, even if they’re anonymous. For example, you may know that 2 people are siblings but you don’t know who their parents are. But they can’t be siblings if they don’t share the same parents, so XYFT creates anonymous parents to hold the family connections together. You may find out later who these parents are and it’s a simple matter of editing them to show real names, dates etc.
